Freeciv-modpack utility

Postby cazfi » Wed Nov 02, 2011 2:38 pm

First freeciv version with freeciv-modpack utility included - 2.3.0 - has been out almost three months now. We have not yet seen anybody making content for it except myself and jtn. And, to be exact, we have more like made existing content available through freeciv-modpack than creating the content.

So, why there has been no more interest about this new shiny tool we have given to you? This thread is for questions and proposals about publishing content through freeciv-modpack.

I know one obstacle for many people to actually publish anything via freeciv-modpack is the way it requires content to be easily downloadable. Many people have no means to setup files for download that way. Still, it would be nice if those people would at least make it easier for others to make their creation available via freeciv-modpack. It's much easier for me to just host the provided files than to write some of them myself.

What we should publish in default list of freeciv-modpack? As real release series, 2.3 (tries) to fetch its list from gna.org. Since gna.org if currently down, I cannot check what that list currently contains. I think there was only ancients modpack, amplio tileset, and freesound soundset las time I checked.

I have several 2.3 modpacks available at www.cazfi.net . Maybe we could add some of these to the official list. URL of list is hardcoded in 2.3, so you cannot check www.cazfi.net list ( http://www.cazfi.net/freeciv/modinst/2.3/modpack.list ) without recompiling freeciv, but .modpack files we may are interested about are:
- http://www.cazfi.net/freeciv/modinst/2.3/GM1530scenarios.modpack - All the scenarios from http://forum.freeciv.org/viewtopic.php?t=6328
- http://www.cazfi.net/freeciv/modinst/2.3/freeland.modpack - Freeland tileset http://forum.freeciv.org/viewtopic.php?t=1648, size Normal
- http://www.cazfi.net/freeciv/modinst/2.3/chess.modpack - Chess tileset, this needs to be updated to the latest release of the tileset
- http://www.cazfi.net/freeciv/modinst/2.3/civ2-3.modpack - http://forum.freeciv.org/viewtopic.php?t=6330

2.4 is in alpha phase. It currently uses modpack list from www.cazfi.net, but real 2.4 releases will use new list from gna.org server. What should go to that final list? Some options:
- amplio tileset (part of current alpha list)
- freesound soundset (we have no 2.4 compatible modpack yet)
- ancients modpack (I'm working on 2.4 compatible modpack)
- GM1530 scenarios (part of current alpha list)
- Alien World ruleset (part of current alpha list)

I'm working to update my ruleset (civ2-3.modpack) to v2.4.
I'd be glad to see it included in the official list, after long time working to try to make it balanced and enjoyable. Unfortunately there is no feedback from players and it is hard to know if people is liking it.
Maybe there is more feedback if included in the modlist by default. I think many casual gamers that liked civ2 and civ3 and do not like the aggresive AI from default Freeciv, could enjoy this civ2-3 mod.

I added 2.4 version to current alpha-list. I want to do some more testing, not only for bugs in ruleset but also freeciv engine bugs it reveals, before adding it to final list.

Current S2_4 freeciv uses alpha-state list from cazfi.net. Only later, more stable, versions will use list from gna.org by default. In 2.4 one can give some other list than the default to be used from freeciv-modpack commandline. "freeciv-modpack -L http://download.gna.org/freeciv/modinst/2.4/modpack.list" will use final list with current versions already, and final 2.4 version can use cazfi.net lists by "freeciv-modpack -L http://www.cazfi.net/freeciv/modinst/2.4/modpack.list"

I plan to keep wider selection of modpacks available in cazfi.net than what makes it to default high-profile gna list.

I took it that lack of discussion means that nobody has strong feelings either way - nobody objects inclusion of some new modpacks to official lists.

I've now added to 2.3 list "GM1530 Scenarios", "Chess", and both normal and big size "Freeland". All of these are still served from www.cazfi.net even when accessed through gna list.

Problem with civ2-3 modpack

Postby ifaesfu » Thu Feb 21, 2013 11:05 pm

I've just installed civ2-3 modpack in freeciv 2.3.3 under windows7 32bits using "freeciv-modpack.exe".
Then I've run freeciv, choosen "Start a new game" and then "civ2-3" in the ruleset box. Well, I haven't got to change anything else to get the client close to the main menu. If I click on "start" or "observe", it goes to the main menu faster.
I've noticed that there isn't any file related to civ2-3 ruleset in the freeciv directory. The other rulesets are located in "/freeciv/data" (default, multiplayer, civ2...).
Also I've noticed that "default ruleset" is the only one which works; multiplayer, civ1, civ2... didn't work either.
It's been a long time since I don't play a solo game, as I usually play in the metaserver, longturn and greatturn, but I'm very interested in this ruleset.

Seems like rulesets are either broken or installed in a wrong path. You could inspect the reason why the server fails by catching its output, starting the server instance individually from console (commands prompt).
Otherwise, you can download the rulesets from GNA, for freeciv 2.3.x or 2.4.x, and save them to disk. Then, to use these rulesets, go in single player mode and type in the chat line:
Code: Select all
/rulesetdir "C:\path\to\ruleset"
and it should work.

Thank you. I've made a fresh installation of freeciv 2.3.4 and all the rulesets work now, including civ2-3 downloaded by means of "freeciv-modpack.exe".
civ2-3 is in C:\Users\ifaesfu\AppData\Roaming\.freeciv together with the directory where it saves the games.

Standing by my memory, I already had the suspect your Freeciv installation in windows was troublesome (maybe because of a manual installation of some tileset / ruleset gone bad?).
Reinstalling Freeciv was the cleaner solution.

Mmm. I sometimes get the same error (it goes to the main menu after choosing a ruleset), but I don't know why.
Anyway, it happens few times.
