Looking for collaboration, can lend a hand with graphics

Postby akaine » Tue Aug 18, 2009 10:06 am

Hello, everyone

I am pretty new here, though I've played Freeciv a few times in the past. Recently I returned to the game more seriously, and saw its real potential.

Once, several years ago I was involved in a commercial game project very similar to civilization by its structure as a 2D/3D designer. (Actually it was Emperor of the Fading Suns 2. Who played the first version of game knows what I am talking about.) The project died, mostly because of beeing 2D and not fancy-pancy 3D (before normal maps era), while I kept some of my works as well all the production experience related to tilesets and icons.

What I am offering is a collaboration with some other tileset author, or someone who knows how to write all the configs but feels weak or need help in graphics.

One comment though. I am interested in developing a big ISOHEX tileset. Why?

1. Because there is only one isohex I found which woks fine and looks relatively decently, and it's tiny like hell.
2. It's a proved fact that a rectangular field are tactically not fair in TBS, because diagonal movement is always better than a direct one, while with a hex field any movement is equal.
3. IMHO Iso-hex looks more real compared to squared one.

For design I use Maya 3D, Bryce 6 and Photoshop CS4

Ready to work when you are

Here are some examples of the failed project I mentioned above (sorry for the eye killing magenta background, it served as alpha channel):

Would you be interested in creating tileset for Alien Worlds ruleset?

Sure...

I'd really love to make a tileset for the classic ruleset, still I could always do some extras...

Can help you with your web site as well...

Well, I can help with .tilespec and .spec files for your tileset for default rules.

I'm very happy that you promised to work on tileset for Alien Worlds, but I'm worried that you don't quite understand how big work that is as you refer to it as "some extras".
It will require complete tileset from scratch. Alien Worlds shares no units with default rules. Terrain types are alien.

And one note: I expect to release everything under GPL2. So the graphics should be released under GPL2.

I fully understand the amount of work. Probably I should have mentioned that I'm prepared to make all the terrain types needed, but not the units... It's a huge work and I promise to help as much as I could but not more than that.

About my availability for the job. I am a full time Java/PHP/Web software architect working as a team leader on one job and as a senior developer on the other. Graphics design is what I wanted to do long time ago and still do but more as a hobby or for a simple web design. Being a programmer pays better you know =P. So calculate that I have 4-5 hours a week for you. Once I have the tiles "production line" it will be fast. With units and buildings it's more difficult and thus will take more time. Still like I mentioned before I am ready to take the challenge.

As for the copyrights - fine with me...

Very good tiles, I especially like the base. While nice, desert tiles look too smooth, little noise wouldn't hurt.
One interesting thing is that isohex uses real isometric projection, not approximation like isosquares.

.tilespec and .spec files are easy to figure out and write, tho some features are not documented. (One thing comes to mind: Are advanced dither tiles supported or not and how to use them? One basic dither tile is very limiting and hard to make to look nice.)
