Zeppelins

What would you like to see in Freeciv? Do you have a good idea what should be improved or how?

Zeppelins

I don't know why this didn't occur to me earlier! Before WWI and till WWII Zeppelins played a major role in human air transportation. They even were used to bomb London! (though not very effectively) Would be nice to have them before airplanes to transport a unit, to explore or even -like previously mentioned- bomb targets.

Reeally nice idea! Though freeciv has problems with introducing units that have no icons. I'm thinking of adding way to reuse certain icons, but additionally drawing some symbol over them. Not possible currently though. Still nice idea if display issues could be painlessly resolved.

Agree, it's quite straightforward to introduce parameters for a new unit in the ruleset, but the big pain is to draw (or grab) a GPL-compatible icon for the unit, which wants a view perspective from a certain angle.

And then you need to distribute it to players! For creating icon one could do some mucking with submarines icon and create something resembling zeppelin quite quickly. Or so I think.

I love this idea !

Zeppelins were great, but balloons and dirigibles played important roles in both WW1 and WW2.

For example, during WW1 high altitude balloons were used for spotting purposes to better coordinate Artillery fire.

During WW2, Zeppelin-shaped balloons & dirigibles were anchored strategically in London, and also during the D-Day operations, to complicate fighter aircraft by blocking their ability to safely fly in battle zones.

Pretty neat stuff. Perhaps we could use Zeppelins in much the same way that Buoys are used, but in the air?
