Lost connection to server

Postby Yumi » Sun Oct 16, 2011 3:46 pm

Installed 2.3.0 in 11.10 . The Client starts. When "starting new game" it shows in the bottom bar that the server starts, then it loads parameters.

Always stops at
Quote:
Console:'migration' has been set to enabled
. The program does not crash as I can Quit from the UI. It rather hangs there forever.

Running it from the terminal shows the error message
Quote:
1: Lost connection to server: server disconnected.
Tried the console install procedure given in another threat in this forum - same result.

Another threat http://forum.freeciv.org/viewtopic.php?t=7087&highlight=server+connection+lost shows a somewhat similar problem. But how can I
Quote:
stopped the auto-exploring destroyers
, and would it work in my case?

Any suggestions?

I take it this means Ubuntu 11.10.

While client does not crash, server probably does, leading then to client hanging. This could actually be considered two separate bugs. 1) Crashing server, 2) hanging client.

I don't quite understand what you refer with "console install procedure", but server crashes are easier to debug by running server separately and not just internally by client as you don't see most of its output in latter case.
Launch freeciv-server (preferably from console), launch freeciv-client. Instead of "Start New Game" select "Connect to Network Game". Host: localhost, Port: 5556

Lost connection to server

Postby Yumi » Sun Oct 16, 2011 10:24 pm

I meant that I installed it following this thread
http://forum.freeciv.org/viewtopic.php?t=7028&sid=f66d90b17645dfb8a550b786edc8f5ee

The client starts and claims "starting server" but then hangs as described in my original post.

Tried your suggestions. On freeciv-server I get:
Quote:
michael@Aspiremobile:~/freeciv-2.3.0/build/server$ freeciv-server
The program 'freeciv-server' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing:
sudo apt-get install freeciv-server
getting into the directory the file freeciv-server is there. Calling it fails. That is the problem. But I do not understand why?

Could you try './freeciv-server'. './' is needed to start a program from the current directory ... In your case freeciv-server is not found in the path. Thus, you need to start it from the build dir.

Oh, so you have built freeciv yourself and are trying to run it without installing, from build directory. It's possible, supported for making freeciv developers life easier, but not considered normal way of running freeciv.

As running server from arbitrary directory is considered security vulnerability, client finds server from build directory only if you have configured freeciv build with --enable-debug option. Also, some environment variable magic must be done when running freeciv from build dir. There are scripts named ./civ (or ./fcgui in 2.4) and ./ser (./fcser in 2.4) that does that. These wrapper scripts must be used instead of running freeciv-server or client directly.
