Republic of San Marino

Postby Davide » Sat Mar 16, 2013 5:52 am

The republic of San Marino, founded in 301 A.D. by saint Marino, is the oldest existing state of the world.
The castle's towers face a cliff of about 700 meters, with a naked-eye sight of about 50 kilometers away at clear sky. The Adriatic sea lies wide on the view field, but remains difficult to be seen due to the tick air. The mount is the highest visible peak you can see turning 360°.

Absolutely beautiful!

Did you go and visit there recently?

Only a couple of years ago, even if I am at 30 km from San Marino and from my garden I can see mount Titano and its houses' lights by sight :p

It indeed gives the feeling of a high-medieval town, with houses built of stone and wood, but it's fully modern and functional for how we are used to think of a town.

So you must live somewhere in the North of Italy then.

When you went to visit, did you need to bring your passport?

Of course not. In theory you just need an european ID card, but practically there are no border checks. There is a main broad road entering straight into San Marino and I don't remember to have been halted there.

Well, I'm not European and I haven't traveled anywhere in Europe (yet!). Because of 9/11, I need my passport to cross into the USA from Canada... and we have the largest undefended border in the world! Silly really.

Nice to know that it's so very easy to get around in that sense. Besides, San Marino is in the Italian sphere of influence anyway, right?

It has its own laws, lower taxes, etc.
For example you can freely buy some kind of guns which in Italy require a license; Marlboro are cheaper; it has its own juridical constitution; etc :)
