Map size and count of players

Postby monamipierrot » Sun Feb 16, 2014 6:58 pm

[ Thread split off "Start date" - Davide ]

Am I wrong or we already are 48?
The biggest game I took part, was, if I can remember, some 70. Quite close!
One question: 400 tiles per player... this would mean, right now, 48*400 = 19200 land tiles. With a landmass of 20% it means that the total tiles are 19200/20*100 = 96,000 tiles which is a HUGE map, bigger than GT01. Am I missing something?

I see landmass of 20% as a bit bad choice, I would suggest something like 27-25. As for number of players do not pay that much attention to registrations, only confirmations matter. Also some idlers will most likely drop out. As it stands currently I would gues that there will be at most 40 most likely 30 players. Also 400 per player?! again seems a bit off, I would say something like 250 is quite enough.

I agree, the map shoudn't grow proportionally with the number of players otherwise the game expands itself to much (land and time). GT 8 manges that pretty well by making the fertile land contested and bad soil more abundant.

I have set tilesperplayer to 250 and landmass to 30.

This would mean:
15 confirmed players -> 12,500 tiles
30 confirmed players -> 25,000 tiles
45 confirmed players -> 37,500 tiles
60 confirmed players -> 50,000 tiles
which is fine for me.

However I want to cast another solution: Totaltiles=(20,000+200*NumberOfPlayers) which would result in:
15 confirmed players -> 23,000 tiles
30 confirmed players -> 26,000 tiles
45 confirmed players -> 29,000 tiles
60 confirmed players -> 32,000 tiles
which would result in a big planet but not huge if confirmed players go beyond 45: it will just be more crowded. In later game it will be easier to look after a big empire.

That's correct. (I only calculated for 30)

I'm for it! I will apply it if there won't be objections.

Nah, bring on the giant map. Maybe aircraft carriers will actually get built :)

I would agree if movement were 3x: with 2x you feel very small and even oceanic exploring is a really hard task.
In GT01 the map was huge (can you remember how much, Davide? Around 60,000 tiles?) and I actually build ONE carrier which would have bene useful in the final World War if there were not dozens of enemy submarines around. So I kept it quite behind the oceanic front and it never took part in a major battle.
Anyway, I suspect that if GT01 map had been just a bit smaller, then the uninhabited continents would had been much more strategical and MAYBE oceans wuold have been a major front, thus forcing opponents to build carriers. Who knows?

I remember around 25,000 tiles; the datasheet helpfully confirms 24,800 =
= players * tiles_per_player * landmass / 100 =
= 18 * 400 * 29 / 100.
